Clinic Notes: There's an App for That

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the most effective treatment for autism. Unfortunately, well-trained ABA therapists are expensive and hard to find. On my website (www.aba4autism.com) I offer an online ABA course for caregivers as well as ABA eBooks, ABA Case Histories, and individual ABA programs. Many parents and other caregivers who have not been able to find and/or pay for an ABA therapist have told me how helpful my website has been for their child with autism. I was watching an iPhone commercial the other day that was talking about all of the apps that could downloaded to the iPhone--apps for everything imaginable and I got to thinking. Why not iPhone apps for ABA? I'm working on it.

I am an affordable BCBA believe it or not and my boyfriend and I have been playing around with ideas for ABA and data taking iPhone apps as well! Thanks for your blog; the information is always interesting

My company has an iPhone app for recording behaviors of children on the autism spectrum. Check out our site: www.symtrend.com and the tour about our work with children on the spectrum. The app is not great for discrete trial training, but is good for other types of behavioral recording and is especially good for doing functional behavioral assessments. You can download the app for a free 7-day trial.

The system is an authoring tool. Clinicians can create their own electronic diaries for each child they see.

We were just awarded a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to develop a digital pen application for discrete trial and other more intensive ABA related applications. You will be able to print out a customized recording form, use a digital pen to make notations, leave the paper behind and sync the pen to our website for automatic charting. The application will be available next summer if not before. We will be adding more charting options this year to include variants more typically used by ABA therapists.

We are interesting in creating an interim solution for this type of work. I'd love to hear from you about what you'd like to see on our system.
